Azure Dynamics, of Canada, develops hybrid power trains. A hybrid power train is made up of an internal combustion, or possibly fuel cell powered, engine, batteries, regenerative braking and an electric generator/motor. The company’s system is suited to vehicles which frequently stop and start. Azure’s USP in this area is its smart energy management system which optimises energy flow, improving fuel economy, lengthening battery life and lowering running costs. Azure concentrates on commercial vehicles involved in short journeys: urban delivery, postal, courier, shuttlebuses and taxis. Vehicles using the Azure Control System (ACS) technology form part of the fleets of Canada Post and US Post. FedEx Express is involved with Azure in developing petrol parallel hybrid electric power trains for its delivery fleet. Azure will supply a development vehicle to FedEx, who have committed to buy 20 vehicles by May 2008.
Azure has signed a deal to supply the hybrid cab-chasis for the StarTrans CitiBus. StarTrans, a leading North American bus manufacturer, will manufacture the buses in Indiana. Azure is dual–listed on Aim and the Toronto Stock Exchange. Historically, most of its revenues have come from funded engineering contracts. There wasn’t much of a contribution from this area in the first quarter of 2007. Revenues dipped from $1.15m to $156,000 which led to an increase in loss from $4.6m to $6.5m. Most of this loss relates to research and development costs. At the end of March net cash was $21.5m. |
