Dear Reader,

Welcome to the pre launch edition of Cleantech magazine. As we go to press, the UK media is gripped by the issues of climate change and the environment. The case for the sceptics has been highlighted by the Channel 4 documentary, the Great Global Warming Swindle, sparking off a heated debate. But politicians from both sides of the political spectrum continue to vie to display their environmental credentials.

Our main feature, Cleantech Goes Mainstream, highlights a change in the political climate in the US. The US was a non signatory to the Kyoto Protocol and environmental issues have not been high on the agenda of the Bush admininstration. President Bush has never subscribed to the scientific consensus on global warming - although his administration has been forced to acknowledge that the polar bear is an endangered species. Bush does however favour energy security and he is increasingly promoting investment in alternative fuels. Meanwhile, individual US states are increasingly signing up to cap and trade systems to reduce carbon emissions on a voluntary basis.

Investment in biofuels is increasingly impacting upon agriculture. We discuss the impact on commodity prices - and the issue of sustainability - in a special supplement on the biofuel industry.

Clean technology is here to stay, irrespective of the debate on global warming. Cleantech magazine aims to report on the sector in an informed and balanced manner. We welcome your views on the issues you believe merit particular attention.

Our website will be expanded over coming weeks to include a discussion forum and we look forward to a lively interaction with our readers.
