THIS EVENT HAS BEEN POSTPONED
A major conference and exhibition looking at how small-scale renewable technologies can help meet Scotland's heating needs will be held in Aviemore on October 29-30. Green energy trade body Scottish Renewables' inaugural micro-generation and heat event will take place at the MacDonald Aviemore Highland Resort. Speakers at the conference include Michael Feliks, deputy director of heat policy at the Department for Business Enterprise and Regulatory Reform, and Dr Brenda Boardman of the University of Oxford's Environmental Change Institute and the author of Homes Truths and the 40% House. Delegates at the event will also hear about the European experience of using renewable technology to meet heat requirements. The conference is aimed at those working in the building and construction industry as well as small-scale renewables practitioners. Scottish Renewables chief executive Jason Ormiston said: “The Scottish Government has recently made a commitment to shift from almost zero heat generated from renewables to more than 11 per cent by 2020. If that does not happen Scotland is highly unlikely to meet its climate change obligations. "The renewables industry estimates 250,000 homes in Scotland will be installed with renewable heat technology to meet this target, providing up to £500 million of business for the biomass sector alone. "However, to reach this goal the industry in Scotland needs to scale up massively in a relatively short space of time. Scottish Renewables' inaugural micro-generation and heat conference and exhibition in Aviemore will consider how this can be achieved." Established in 1996, it represents more than 250 companies working in wind, wave, tidal, microgeneration, hydro and biomass. By 2020, Scotland is targeted to meet more than half of its electricity needs from renewable sources and more than 11 per cent of heating needs. Scotland's renewable energy generation capacity in megawatts (MW) as at October 8, 2008 is: hydro 1382.15MW; wind 1394.68MW; waste 99.68MW; biomass electricity 78.92; biomass heat 29.41MW equivalent; wave 0.5MW. |
