Wave energy is not evenly distributed around the world. There is increased wave activity between the latitudes of 30 degrees and 60 degrees in both northern and southern hemispheres, where the Westerlies are the prevailing winds.

From a European perspective, the western coasts of Europe provide highly energetic waves, with higher power levels found only in the southern parts of South America and the Antipodes. The north-eastern Atlantic, including the North Sea, has estimated wave power resources of about 290GW. Power levels in the Mediterranean are far more modest, with the entire annual deep-water resource along the European coasts in the Mediterranean being in the region of 30GW. The total wave energy resource for Europe is thus put at around 320GW.
