With the alternative energy sector, it is important to distinguish between macroeconomic sentiment and opportunity. Within the sector there are defined tiers based on commercial maturity. The overriding reality, though, is that broader political, economic and social trends remain in favour of alternative energy.

Microfuze International 2007's best performing UK Quoted cleantech stock 

Microfuze International, which was featured in the AIM Investor column (by Andrew Hore) in Cleantech magazine last year, was the best performing UK quoted clean technology stock in 2007 with a gain of 226%. The second best performer was Qonnectis, with a share price rise of 203%. Qonnectis is active in the 'smart metering' sector, subject of a feature in issue 3 of Cleantech magazine.

FREE CONTENT: Tracking Cleantech Performance, December 2007 PDF Print E-mail

The global credit crunch and associated stock market weakness has taken its toll on cleantech stocks. However, cleantech indices are still showing healthy increases on the year as 2007 draws to a close. Globally, the cleantech sector is performing strongly, with the S&P Global Clean Energy Index notching up gains of over 70% year-to-date. The Wilderhill New Energy Global Innovation Index was also up more than 50% in mid December. The US indices are mostly just under 20% higher.
