From the countless recent debates surrounding climate change and energy security, one technology has emerged with almost universal endorsement. Al Gore cannot imagine successfully negotiating the grueling transition to clean energy without it. The Stern Review saw it as “essential”, Gordon Brown has weighed in with support from the UK budget, and Alex Salmond, First Minister of Scotland, is on record as saying: “Once in every generation, an industrial opportunity comes about whose scale and potential are so mind blowing that it must be grabbed and realized”.
