Cleantech magazine - September 2008 The September 2008 issue of Cleantech magazine focused on the challenge of urban living. In 2008. for the first time, more than half of the population of the world lives in cities. Cities pose enormous challenges on our resources of energy as their buildings and transportation infrastructures are enormous consumers of fuel. The growing urban population is also causing major problems in terms of pollution and waste. In this issue we review some of the possible solutions offered by clean technology in our resource constrained urban world. In our main feature we look at some innovative architectural design and building technology solutions being forwarded, we discuss the eco-town proposals in the UK and look at some of the other eco-communities and eco-cities which exist or are in the planning stage around the world. We also review some of the measures being adopted by cities around the world to deal with the challenge of public transport - ranging from the rapid transit bus system in Curitiba, Brazil, to the decision by the Delhi municipality that all public transport should run on CNG. |
